It’s possible to create a backyard oasis, even in the Arizona desert! Transform your custom home’s outdoor space into a cool, welcoming escape just in time for the summer months. Use these tips as inspiration to create a one-of-a-kind design.
1. Just add water
Nothing is more refreshing than taking a dip in a swimming pool on a blistering summer day. So consider adding an in-ground pool to your backyard. If space is an issue, a lap pool could be a good option.
Pools not your thing? Opt for water features like fountains, ponds, water walls, or even a staircase waterfall. From courtyard fountains to koi ponds to blade fountains to small streams incorporated into your landscaping, the ways to add water are truly endless.
2. Create some shade
Huge shade trees aren’t common in our desert environment, so you’ll have to look for other ways to shade your backyard. Umbrellas, patio curtains, triangular boat sail shades, rolling shades or even hanging plants can deflect the Arizona sun. If you want something more permanent, consider adding a gazebo, pergola or cabana. These structures not only offer a sanctuary from the sun, but they add architectural features to your backyard.
3. Green it up
Every oasis needs greenery. Unfortunately, the Arizona desert isn’t the greenest place on Earth so help things along. Incorporate potted plants into your landscaping and look for hearty perennials that grow in our unique climate. Yucca, various cacti varieties, paddle plants, agave, Mexican feather grass and friendships trees are good options. Along with green, these plants will add color and texture to your oasis.
4. Make it cozy
Any oasis should be comfortable and cozy. Add a cushy sectional sofa, hammocks, patio egg chairs or lux lounge chairs. Be sure to include a throw pillows, and you’ll have the perfect place for an afternoon snooze.
5. Build an outdoor theater
Install a movie screen — or DIY a temporary version using a drop cloth or sheet — and spend summer evenings watching your favorite films or TV shows. All you need is a projector, a set of Bluetooth speakers and some comfortable seating to create the right ambiance in your oasis. Pass the popcorn, please!
6. Build a fire pit
Desert nights can be cool, so warm things up with a fire pit. Many prefabricated versions are available at your local home improvement store, or you can build one yourself using simple materials. There are plenty of tutorials online to help you get started.
